Manhasset Crew Team has completed its second exhilarating season of fall rowing. During the fall season, the crew team rowed in the Frostbite Regatta at Center Island Beach. The team competed against clubs cross the island including Chaminade, St. Anthony's, Half Hallow Hills, Our Lady of Mercy, Huntington, Friends Academy, Cold Spring Harbor and Oyster Bay. The men's four, rowed by TJ Connolly, Denis Judge, Paul Calluzzo, John Lawrence and coxswain Anne Rubin, won the bronze medal in their race. The mixed varsity four, rowed by Bryan Meskell, Denis Judge, Emily Faeth, Tim Miller and coxswain Anne Rubin, came within meters of winning their heat.
The crew team rows in the fall and the spring. The team practices at Bar Beach where they keep their three rowing shells, two eights and one four. The Crew Club started two years ago and has greatly expanded since the commencement of the program. The crew team consisted of 14 boys and girls between the grades of 8-12. Coach Lauren Smith, who was a member of the LaSalle University crew team has tremendously improved the crew program.
For any high school boys and girls interested in being on the crew team there will be a meeting on Feb. 25 at Manhasset High School. Workouts will begin on March 4. The first few weeks will be spent indoors on campus getting prepared for the spring season. When the weather allows, the team will return to the water. This spring it is planned to enter three regattas at Hempstead Lake, Center Island Beach and West Point Military Academy.
