Councilman Angelo Ferrara announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the office of the supervisor of the Town of North Hempstead.

The Congregational Church of Manhasset called Rev. Jimmy Only to serve as the church's fifth minister. The more than 200 members who attended voted unanimously for Rev. Only. Rev. Only will continue as associate minister for youth until July 1, at which time Rev. Maurice Fetty retires after 13 years in Manhasset.

The Town of North Hempstead held its eighth annual Women's History Breakfast. Inductees from Manhasset were Phyllis Kurland and Norma Cohen. Phyllis Kurland is a professor at Nassau Community College where she began the Nassau Community College Folk Festival in 1971, Ms. Cohen is a member of the Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock. She was one of the founders of the congregation's Hadley House, senior housing in Port Washington. She is also active in New Yorkers Against Gun Violence.

Bishop John R. McGann confirmed 133 students in two ceremonies at St. Mary's Church, Manhasset.

The Manhasset Board of Education adopted the proposed budget for the 2001-2002 school year. The result is a blended average tax rate increase of 4.11 percent.

The St. Mary's Gaels ice hockey team captured its sixth New York State Hockey Title.

His fellow commissioners, Patricia Roberts and Bernard Rolston elected Commissioner Edward Winrow chairman of the Manhasset Park District.

A Manhasset Post Office letter carrier saved the life of a Flower Hill woman who had collapsed on her kitchen floor and became dehydrated after being unable to get up for several days. Mr. Hinde saw that mail had been collecting in her letterbox and reported it to the Flower Hill Village Hall, where staff members called the police.

Barbara Donno, Reuben Cohen and Michelle Impellizeri announced their candidacies for the two open seats on the Manhasset Board of Education.

Citing safety concerns, the Town of North Hempstead Supervisor May Newburger announced "reluctantly" that the town can no longer host a Memorial fireworks display at Bar Beach in Port Washington. Local fire departments, Nassau County Police and Port Washington Police had expressed concern about safety issues in the event of an emergency. The popularity of the event had grown beyond the ability to handle the ever-increasing crowds.

SCA Fair had another record breaking day on May 5. This year's chairpersons were Lori Fleishhacker and Barbara Vessa.

Nassau Democrats selected Assemblyman Tom DiNapoli as their candidate for Nassau County Executive. This meant that there would be a September Democratic primary election as Glen Cove Mayor Tom Suozzi said that he would remain in the race.

Two hundred and eighty people gathered at North Hempstead Country Club to say goodbye to Maurice and Sara Fetty. Rev. Maurice Fetty had been senior minister of The Congregational Church of Manhasset for 13 years.

New York State Comptroller Carl McCall's office released the result of its audit of the Manhasset Park District's books. Certain recommendations were made for procedural changes and commissioners reimbursed the district for some unauthorized expenditures.

Water from the Manhasset Lakeville Water District was judged to be the tastiest in Nassau County in this year's annual Best Tasting Tap Water contest. Founded in 1911, the Manhasset-Lakeville Water District serves 43,000 people via 18 wells in an 11-square mile area. It has a pumping capacity of 31 million gallons per day and maintains 1,274 fire hydrants.

Businessman Bruce Bent of Plandome received the Republican and Conservative nominations for Nassau County Executive. He will face the winner of a DiNapoli-Suozzi Democratic primary in November. Supervisor May Newburger announced that she will be a candidate for a fifth term as supervisor of the Town of North Hempstead.

The American Legion Post #304 proclaimed "The Dawn of a New Century" with its May 28, 2001 Memorial Day Parade.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 6 for the Harbor Ridge lifecare community across from Hempstead Harbor and adjacent to Harbor Links Golf Course. Marriott Senior Living Services will be managing Harbor Ridge.

Catherine Rosso of Manhasset was nominated by the Republicans to run for North Hempstead Town Clerk. She will face incumbent Michelle Schimel in November.

Manhasset High School celebrated its 81st commencement on Friday, June 21.

The Manhasset Public Library board of trustees concluded unanimously that the best place for the library is right where it is. The library will acquire the property currently occupied by Adam Art as the site of the new library. The current library area will become parking. This is subject to a referendum to be offered to the voters in the spring of 2001.
