The new officers of the Manhasset Post 304 are sworn in (left to right): Paul Early, Anthony Buzzitta, John Keitz, Edward Gaus, James Russell, Felix Andrews, Joseph Labella and George Becker.

On Thursday, Oct. 18, the Manhasset Post 304 of the American Legion held its annual Installation Dinner at the Swan Club in Glenwood Landing. Past County Commander William A. Baxter performed the ceremony assisted by Ronald G. Linn, sergeant-at-arms and William Martin of the Manhasset Post. Legionnaire William Martin also acted as the chaplain for the evening and gave the benediction and prayer before dinner.

The newly installed officers are Post Commander Edward J. Gaus, 1st Vice Commander James R. Russell, 2nd Vice Commander John F. Keitz, 3rd Vice Commander Anthony W. Buzzitta, Adjutant Felix G. Andrews, Treasurer Joseph Labella, Chaplain William A. Baxter, Historian Paul J. Early, Service Officer George E. Becker and Sergeant-at-Arms Ronald G. Linn.

Past Post Commander Richard E. Miller was presented with the past commander's pin. He thanked all those legionnaires who were so generous in volunteering their time and services over the last two years. He spoke of the programs, so successful, which would have been impossible but for the "team" spirit and support within the Post. He congratulated the new commander and his officers and chairmen.

Commander Edward J. Gaus spoke briefly of the leadership and achievements of the Junior Past Post Commander Richard E. Miller over the last two years: his commitment, planning and organization necessary for the Memorial Day Parade; and the award winning programs to foster a strong sense of patriotism as well as support for veterans and the community.

Commander Edward Gaus presented the main objectives of his administration; first and foremost a strong and active membership for the Post to achieve success in all its programs. The commander stressed that he would reach out, investigate and expand the Post's support to all veterans, especially at the Northport VA Hospital. He emphasized continued support to programs that educate our youth in Americanism and patriotism, especially our elementary school youth on the significance and respect of our flag. The commander spoke of his programs in continuing a visible presence in the community in promoting American ideals and values by example; and a reminder to all that what we have must not be taken for granted - they were fought for and must be protected, especially during these present times.

The Installation Dinner and Dance was planned and organized by Mr. and Mrs. William A. Baxter. Contact: Edward J. Gaus (627-1729)
