Voting--this year more than ever--is everyone's opportunity, as well as duty as a citizen, to have a say in the government we have. By choosing our elected representatives, we fulfill our most basic responsibility to our country. The League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset urges every person who is eligible to go to the proper polling place and vote on Tuesday, Nov. 6. As we participate in electing the officials of Nassau County and the Town of North Hempstead, we show how much we value our democracy and freedom.
Be sure to check the proposals at the top of the ballot. State Proposal #1 is to make the New York State Constitution gender neutral to include women along with men, so that references to our state officials and legislators are more accurate. Until now, a female official has sworn an oath of allegiance to uphold a constitution, which does not recognize her existence. On the ballot, too, is Nassau County Proposition #1 reforming the county's planning procedures and establishing a four-year capital plan and budget--much needed improvement. The League supports a vote of "yes" on both proposals.
