As many Manhasset residents know, Greentree was the home of the late Mr. and Mrs. John H. Whitney. Mrs. Whitney gave the property to the Greentree Foundation, a family foundation founded by Mrs. Whitney in 1983. However, long before the founding of the foundation, the Whitneys gave serious consideration to the future of this magnificent place. They felt very strongly that Greentree should be preserved and remain intact. And they also frequently expressed the hope that Greentree would be used for important charitable purposes, perhaps to further understanding among people of different nations.

Plans for the future use of Greentree have been agreed upon by the Greentree trustees and are faithful to Mr. and Mrs. Whitney's wishes. The property will not be divided. There will be no new construction or development, other than to upgrade existing facilities - primarily to make them safe and accommodating for small meetings.

Consistent with the Whitneys' wishes, Greentree is to be used as a meeting place for leaders, diplomats and scholars and others to address human rights, justice and international relations. Given the planned mission and goals, the key agencies of the United Nations, coordinated by the Office of the Secretary General, logically would be the most frequent users. Other organizations and related groups similar in scope and importance with common interests and goals would be permitted to convene small meetings there as well.

The number of persons meeting at Greentree, which has its own ample security personnel, would be limited in number. There would be little or no pressure put on Nassau County's 6th Police Precinct, nor should there be any diplomatic issues.

The Whitneys' concern for community and nation was expressed throughout their lives by numerous acts of generosity to many people and institutions. It is the Greentree Foundation's hope that Mr. and Mrs. Whitney's concern for international understanding and well being of the world can give life to a quiet, but important, undertaking at Greentree. The need for such endeavors is clearer than ever.
