Barbara Donno, Manhasset Board of Education president, read the following statement on behalf of board members, into the record of the Sept. 25 meeting.

The tragedy that took place on Tuesday, Sept. 11th, and the events that have unfolded since that date, have permanently and profoundly affected the lives of all of our students, staff and community.

We are always sustained by the love and support of friends, loved ones and colleagues. At a time such as this, we also look to the institutions that have been stable forces in our lives for support, help and guidance. The Manhasset School District has an important role to play in this process because of the central role it plays in the life of the Manhasset community.

Our deepest sympathy and condolences go to our students, staff and community members who have been directly affected by this tragedy and to who, while not directly affected, are attempting to cope with this tragedic situation as it unfolds. It is fitting for us now to rededicate ourselves to certain principles that we hold dear.

We believe that we live in the most wonderful country in the world where freedom, peace and security are available for all.

We believe that all Manhasset students, staff and community members need to be supported regardless of whether they have been personally touched by this tragedy or not. We reaffirm our commitment to reject any bias or prejudice directed toward any member of our community, staff or students.

The Manhasset School District condemns the violence that occurred. It urges everyone to roll up their sleeves and rededicate themselves to the principles and ideals that have made our community and our country great. Our respect for the individual is paramount. We reject those who seek to spread hatred or undermine the safety, welfare and personal freedom enjoyed by the "Manhasset family."

The board of education would also like to publicly thank and commend the district's administrators, teachers and staff for their prompt action following the events of Sept. 11. The caring, compassion and support offered to students and to colleagues reflect the sentiments and values of our special community.
