Thomas Merrick McQuilling, 79, of Manhasset died on Sept. 23, 2001. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Daly McQuilling. He is survived by his children, Lorrie Gordon, Leslie McQuilling, T. Merrick McQuilling II, Ann Denihan and Patricia Spellman. He was the father-in-law of Catherine McQuilling, Harold Gordon. Laurence Denihan and Richard Spellman. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Lauren Marusi; Merrick, Griffin and Carson McQuilling; Correy, Kelsey, Riley and Ranait Denihan; Brendan, Julia and Paige Spellman. He is also survived by his sisters, Ann Louise Christsen and Jane Mason and his brother, James Alexander McQuilling.
Thomas Merrick was born in Flushing, NY. He attended Flushing High School and graduated from the Admiral Farragut Academy in 1939. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1941 and graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1945. He served as chief engineer on board the submarine USS Bugara in the Pacific Theatre. Following World War II he was employed by Standard Oil of Indiana, Daniel K. Ludwig, shipowner, and Amerada Hess. In 1972 he founded McQuilling Brokerage Co., Inc. which became a world renowned oil tanker brokerage company. He was the past president of the American Legion Hague Post and a long-standing member of North Hills Country Club in Manhasset. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Fairchild Funeral Chapel in Manhasset. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, at St. Mary's Church in Manhasset with interment following in St. Peter's Cemetery.
