The Lakeville AMEZ (African Methodist Episcopal Zion) Church on Community Drive in Manhasset is planning a major cleanup this Saturday. In recognition of its designation as a National Landmark, members of the community have offered to help the small church congregation with its cleanup efforts. Pastor Archie Cherry states: "Some of you have visited recently and offered your assistance because of our designated National Landmark status. This we appreciate and want to continue our relationship with you. It is part of our goal to make this area a place of pride, solitude and hope for this community and we need you and others in order to do this. Let us begin with this event and continue into next year, seeking assistance in goods and services for the restoration of our church and parsonage."

Rev. Cherry has written to election candidates as well as town officials, other pastors and ministers of community churches, Jewish temples and officials of civic associations. "We want to confirm a relationship with those who govern this town," he says.

Those who wish to help this Saturday are asked to come to the church, which is located on the opposite side of Community Drive from North Shore University Hospital, armed with rakes, shovels, tools or equipment, weed spray, bug spray and/or garbage bags for clearing the churchyard, burial ground and parsonage of weeds, decayed trees and debris. The donation of water, soda and refreshments would also be appreciated. Local resident and businessman Mr. Luis Biundo, will donate hot dogs and hamburgers to serve those who come to help.

Rev. Cherry emphasizes that he is reaching out to members of all political parties. "We are nonpartisan and will welcome all who come out to help us on this day." He also adds his voice to all those who are encouraging all eligible voters to vote in the forthcoming election. Candidates and community leaders will be given time to speak between noon and 2 p.m. to present their ideas for the coming elections.
