Regarding the County Executive Democratic Primary, in which the Glen Cove Mayor Suozzi is running, I was certainly surprised by his response and solution to a Newsday article that addressed the crumbling county owned building problems. In essence, part of Mayor Suozzi's solution to the building problems is to put together a task force of independent real estate professionals to investigate the problem and propose appropriate solutions. He had mentioned his task force would include a certain executive from "Kimco," a national real estate developer that does business on Long Island.
For many of us who live in Manhasset, the mere mention of "Kimco" causes concern. After all, against the community's opposition, Kimco received favorable rezoning of their Filene's Basement property from our town board. In short, the rezoning converted their property from a Parking District to Commercial A - giving the developer more rights to develop the property. Manhasset residents opposed rezoning for various environmental issues, including the estimated 20,000 weekly new car traffic that will be brought to Northern Boulevard and Shelter Rock Road intersection causing potential gridlock once the property is developed as planned.
It should be clearly noted, the Manhasset opposition has nothing personally against Kimco and respects Kimco's responsibility to deliver value to their shareholders. Our total disappointment is with our town board who went against our protest in favor of rezoning which benefited Kimco. For this reason we are very concerned with the upcoming election and the position the candidate takes with respect to real estate development and related rezoning.
Further, in passing the Kimco property this past Saturday at Filene's Basement, there is a conspicuous large billboard promoting Suozzi for County Executive which questions the independence between Kimco and Suozzi.
As an update it should be noted, the residents of Manhasset are litigating in court the town board's decision.
In closing, as long as there is an ongoing litigation involving zoning of the Kimco property, Mayor Suozzi would be better served by maintaining independence from Kimco. As Mr. Suozzi expands his support and understands the local issues I trust he will familiarize himself with this issue and agree enough is enough with the overdevelopment of the North Shore, in particular, Manhasset.
