Long-time Manhasset resident and beloved wife of Seymour, Beverly Hunter passed away on Saturday, July 21, after a short illness. "Never one to complain about her own health problems, always thinking of others, the cancer was diagnosed only three weeks ago and she went down hill fast. It's hard to believe such a vibrant, caring woman could change so quickly," said her husband. "I brought tapes of music she liked best to the hospital, but she didn't seem to know it."

Beverly was born in Winnipeg, Canada, and moved with her parents to Buffalo, NY, where she grew up. She was living in The Bronx when she met Seymour Hunter. They were married in 1941 on Seymour's first furlough from the Army. In 1948 they moved to Manhasset, where they have lived ever since.

Besides her husband, Beverly is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Pittman, and two grandchildren, Kate and Kenneth, of Seattle, WA.

Beverly will be remembered especially by the members of the R.E.A.P. group (Retired Executives and Professionals), which she and Seymour ran so competently for the past 12 years. They put together programs, which both entertained and educated. "Beverly was the perfect hostess at these twice-monthly meetings," said Amy Angus. "She always saw that everyone had a good seat, and newcomers met the old-timers."

"Beverly seemed to enjoy selecting the pastries and serving the coffee, as well as meeting and greeting the attendees," said Mary Minturn, "and making sure we all had our individualized name tags."

While Jennifer was growing up, Beverly helped with the Brownies and then the Girl Scouts. Always community minded, Beverly found time to volunteer at North Shore Hospital and recently helped run the North Shore Child Guidance Thrift Shop on Plandome Road. She and Seymour attended all the library concerts, as they were both music lovers.

Funeral rites were held on Sunday, July 22, at the Reconstructionist Synagogue of the North Shore on Plandome Road. Rabbi Lee Friedlander officiated. In his eulogy, the Rabbi noted how much Beverly will be missed, not only by her devoted husband, but also by members of the congregation, where the Hunters have long been active members. "Beverly always put others ahead of herself," he said. "Even at the end, she was thinking of her husband and asked me to look after him."

Longtime Manhasset resident Nancy Knuth passed away peacefully on her birthday, July 20, after a short illness. She is survived by her husband Charles in the 50th year of their marriage, by their daughters Deborah, Penelope, Nancy and Jane, and by six grandchildren.

A half-century ago, after the war had brought women in numbers to the workplace, Nancy forsook her career to become a full-time wife and mother. A founder of the Broadway-Flushing Homeowners Association, she earned her baccalaureate at Adelphi University in 1984 after her children were grown. A talented artist, Nancy was active for many years in the Art Workshop at the Manhasset Library.

Services are private. Donations may be made to Hospice Care of Long Island.
