Assemblyman Tom DiNapoli, candidate for Nassau County Executive, and the county Democratic ticket officially kicked off their campaign on Thursday with the filing of more than 14,000 Democratic signatures.
DiNapoli also became the first Democratic candidate for Nassau County Executive to receive the designation of four party lines, having qualified on the Democratic, Independence, Liberal and Working Families Party lines for November.
At a press conference held on the steps of the Board of Elections, DiNapoli said "We stand here today ready to replace the waste and mismanagement with responsible leadership for a change; ready to replace 30 years of one-party rule with open and honest government and ready to replace a broken system with a government that works with the people and for the people."
Howard Weitzman, a CPA and former mayor of Great Neck Estates, added, "I'm proud to be on the ticket with Tom, Sharon and Chuck. The good news is that this is the beginning of the end of the nightmare." Weitzman is candidate for County Comptroller and will face incumbent Republican Fred Parola in November.
Candidate for District Attorney is Charles "Chuck" Ferzola, a former Nassau County Assistant District Attorney and teacher at Hofstra University Law School. "As Nassau's chief law enforcement officer I will do whatever is necessary to enforce the laws of New York State without being influenced by personal opinions or political pressure."
Sharon Commissiong, candidate for Nassau County Clerk, is also a former Assistant District Attorney. "I have twin goals," she said, "to serve the general public and increase the revenues Nassau County desperately needs."
Assemblyman DiNapoli will face a Democratic Party primary in September against Glen Cove Mayor Tom Suozzi. Whichever of the two men wins the primary, the rest of the ticket will remain the same.
