Three years ago the Science Museum asked the Village of Plandome Manor to move the village office from the main building. Regardless of the office location, the village will maintain usage of the large, first floor room for board meetings and village elections.
The board of trustees has discussed its options at various times. It first considered creating an office at another location on the Science Museum property. At the time, one trustee endorsed this idea because it left the village's other assets intact.
Keeping in mind the need is only for an office where village business can be conducted, the board considered renting space.
The board is now considering a third option - purchasing a private residence within the village and converting it to a village hall. How many homeowners want to see the residence next door to them be turned into a municipal building, with all the additional traffic such a building would bring? The village would incur a $1 million debt for this project to be repaid in 15 years. That would mean another $400-$500 in taxes to each homeowner. The cost of the conversion and maintenance of the building would also be an expense added to the village tax.
The residence in question is located near the railroad station and would give the village a few extra parking spots. If a resident is a golf member, he can park at the country club. Residents whose offices are not in Manhattan have no need of these additional parking spots. Neither do retirees or residents who enjoy walking through our lovely village to the railroad station. In order to satisfy the demands of a vocal minority of residents the board will make all residents pay for the minority's convenience.
The board of trustees has scheduled a special meeting to be held on July 16, 8 p.m. at the Science Museum to discuss this matter. Why hasn't notice of this meeting been posted on the public access channel?
