In regard to honoring Police Officer Joseph Coote, the best way to do it would be to place a monument inscription or plaque on it, rather than change the name of a street. The naming of a street in his honor would be meaningless to the vast majority of persons seeing it as they did not live in Manhasset when he was killed and they know nothing about who he was or what happened. Furthermore the changing of street names is a bad idea in itself.
The monument could not only have his name on it, but a brief message telling what happened. This monument should be placed at the north end of the small park between the new and old Shelter Rock Roads, almost directly opposite the parking lot where the crime took place. It would be within about 200 yards of the scene of the crime. Furthermore the small park which is unnamed at the present time could be named in his honor.
This would create a unique memorial to Officer Coote and at the same time not make any change in already existing street names or names of parks.
