In honor of the fact that June 14 is Flag Day, we offer a few quotations about the American Flag.

"My men, yonder are the Hessians. They were bought for seven pounds and ten pence a man. Are you worth more? Prove it. Tonight the American flag floats from yonder hill or Molly Stark sleeps a widow."

John Stark before the Battle of Bennington, 1777

"Tramp, tramp tramp the boys are marching,

Cheer up comrades, they will come,

And beneath the starry flag

We shall breathe the air again

Of the free land in our own beloved home."

Civil War song

"Hats off! Along the street there comes

A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums,

A flash of color beneath the sky.

Hats off! The flag is passing by."

Henry Holcomb Bennett

"I see that the old flagpole still stands. Have your troops hoist the colors to its peak, and let no enemy ever haul them down."

Gen. Douglas MacArthur, in 1945, after the recapture of Corregidor
