By Eileen Brennan
The Manhasset American Legion Post 304 proclaimed "The Dawn of a New Century" with its May 28, 2001 Memorial Day Parade. As usual, the parade began at 10 a.m. at Plandome Road and Webster Avenue and wound its way down past Town Hall, turning to end at Memorial Field.
Once there, Richard E. Miller, the post commander opened the ceremonies. Legionnaire Robert E. McGuire, accompanied by the Manhasset High School Band, under the direction of Randy Knudsen, led the crowd in the Star Spangled Banner. Rev. Stuart Clark, pastor of the Community Reformed Church, gave the invocation in which he reminded his hearers that we are all called to serve, just as our forbears "who set aside pen and plough to serve their country" were. This year's Poppy Queen, Maylat Worku of St. Mary's High School was introduced and then the Scout and Brownie troops presented their floral tributes. Chaplain William A. Baxter read the roll call of the honored dead. A firing squad gave honor to deceased veterans and Roger Kalia and John Polowczyk of Manhasset High School played Taps.
Vice Commander Edward Gaus presented School Awards to Matthew Mason of St. Mary's High School and Steve Gavalas of Manhasset High School. He then presented Boy's State Awards to T. J. Connolly, Derek Shriftman and Chris Mirobile of Manhasset High School and Sean O'Donnell of Manhasset Boy Scout Troop #97.
Auxiliary President Mary McGuire introduced Marilyn Furlong, Americanism chairlady, who presented School Awards to Maureen Lee of St. Mary's High School and Kristine Charbonneau of Manhasset High School. Girl's State Chairlady Theresa Bjorkman presented the Girl's State Award to Poppy Queen Maylat Worku.
