"Hats off!
Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums,
A flash of color beneath the sky.
Hats off!
The flag is passing by!"
Henry Holcomb Bennett
For many of us in Manhasset, Memorial Day is a high spot of the year. It is heartwarming to see so many families, multi-generations, coming out to honor our veterans and our country. American Legion Post 304 is responsible for this event and year after year the members of the Post outdo themselves in presenting an event that is patriotic, dignified and great fun. Some years it seems as if there are more marchers than spectators but this year the sidewalks were filled. Perhaps it was because we felt so fortunate that, after a solid week of rain, the skies cleared in time for the big day. Especially noteworthy, aside from the Legionnaires themselves and their Auxiliary members, the Manhasset High School Band, the other bands, was the participation of the Manhasset Baseball League. The sight of all those young athletes gives us enthusiastic optimism about the future of Manhasset. It was a great day. As Father Peter said in his Benediction, we heard the word "thanks" very often on Monday. It's a good word and we add our thanks once again to American Legion Post 304.
