Les Petracca's fifth grade boys lacrosse squad came from behind to beat the perennially strong Garden City team 5-3. Les's lads, aided by coaches Andy Palmedo and Dan Corcoran, kept their composure although behind, to step smartly ahead during the second half of the game. This victory follows the team's decisive 10-6 win over Rockville Centre the prior week.
Attackman Greg Cunningham and midfielder Dylan McGoldrick shared hot stick of the day honors. Greg and Dylan each scored two goals. Greg stepped up and took some awesomely hard shots.
Attackman Tyler Corcoran continued his fine play by adding a goal and an assist to his always impressive stats.
Midfielders Chase Cotter and James Wenk, each with two assists, led the team in that key category. Additionally, Chase was top man in the all-important stat, ground ball retrievals. James is the team's two-game leader in assists.
The attack was rounded out by erstwhile defenseman Alex Yakaitis. Due to teammates' injury and vacation, Alex was called to play the crease on the other side of the field.
The midfield was prowled with tenacity by speedster Shea Licata, Peter Gallo and Craig Matteo. These boys did an outstanding job of covering the field.
The defense did a great job of helping Manhasset keep the lead. Defensemen Patrick Lyons, Drew Keneally and Michael Impellizeri started the pressure in the beginning of the game and never let up. The Dee-men were later joined by Kyle Geiger who did a fine job of clearing the ball.
The goal was well protected by Goalie Nick Petracca. Nick, coming off his more than 30 saves against Rockville Centre, stopped the Garden City shots when it counted most. After a save, Nick did a great job of clearing the ball.
These boys have been coached well and they have practiced hard. This dedication by both coaches and players showed in this stunning victory over an always tough Garden City team.
