Leo Donohue died on March 3, 2001 in Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, FL. He was born in Waterville, ME, on Feb. 24, 1924. He was 77 years old. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1942 where he excelled in sports. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Maine on Orono where he also received his master's degree.

His first teaching job was in Barre, VT, where he taught math and was assistant principal in an elementary school. In 1952, he went to Port Washington. He taught math, became an assistant principal and later principal of John Phillip Sousa High School. After being principal for 15 years, he retired in 1979 at the age of 55 years.

Erlyn Madonia, one of Leo's teachers, wrote in the Port Washington Teachers Association booklet on Sept. 13, 2000, "Leo Donohue, the principal, seeemed to be the rock of Gibraltar, loved children, and took great pride in his staff and his school. When you needed someone to lean on, he was there."

He was a Navy veteran serving in WWII, a member of the Port Washington Retired Educator Chapter, Waterville American Legion Post #5 and Waterville Elk's Lodge.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lillian and Williard Donohue; sister Theresa Dubay and brother Donald Donohue. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Marguerite of Waterville, ME; sons Leonard and companion Hope of Blanca, CO and Gary (Sandra) of Canaan, ME; daughter Deborah (Manny) of Winslow, ME; sister Patrica (Alton Grenier) of Winslow; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in his memory to The Salvation Army, 225 Main St., Waterville, ME 04901.

Lucy M. Salerno, 79, of Port Washington, died on March 26, 2001. She is survived by her husband James; her children Elizabeth Di Leo and Vincenza De Santis; and six grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister Antonia Tomassi. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Religious service. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
