The Town of North Hempstead held its eighth annual Women's History Breakfast on March 28. Begun by Supervisor May Newburger, the breakfasts honor North Hempstead residents who have made their mark in various fields, from government, volunteer service, the arts, the professions and athletics. There were 21 new inductees this year, including two from Manhasset, Norma Cohen and Phyllis Kurland.

As usual, the program was begun by Shirley Romaine, actress and television personality from Great Neck. Ms. Romaine chose readings from May Sarton, Maxine Kunin, Lillian Hellman and Lily Pastor--some poems, some prose and all beautifully delivered and well received.

Norma Cohen received a master of arts in critical social work from Smith and has been an Alcoholics Anonymous counselor since 1963. She is a member of the Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Shelter Rock. As a member of this committee, she was one of the founders of the congregation's Hadley House, senior housing in Port Washington. She is also active in New Yorkers versus Gun Violence, the Interfaith alliance and the church choir.

Phyllis Kurland has been a professor at Nassau Community College since 1969. She began the Nassau Community College Folk Festival in 1971 and has been the producer of the festival since that time. She has also been the producer and advisor of the Nassau County Community College's Children's Performance Art program.

Others honored included Lois Basile of Mineola, who is well-known for the quilts she makes, telling local stories; Florence Clark of Westbury, one of the founders of the Westbury, Carle Place, New Cassel NAACP; Evelyn Phillips, former editor of the Roslyn News; Beverly Reese of Post Washington, an Emergency Technician with Fire Medic Company #1, who has logged hundreds of hours on duty; and Patti Wood, also of Port Washington, who is a leader on environmental issues. She has spent hundreds of hours educating children and adults concerning the dangers of pesticides.
