St. Mary's varsity hockey team continued their dominance of the Philadelphia High School Hockey Tournament with a five game sweep. Even with a blizzard going on, the Gaels were on fire on the ice as they won their third straight championship. The first game was against Washington Township form New Jersey and the Gaels prevailed 4-3. Andy Gartman had two goals. Dan Doremus and Brian Mitchell had the other two goals. The second game had St. Mary's against Henderson from Pennsylvania. Goalie Rob Phelan stopped all 11 shots to gain a shutout. Matt Gilroy, Andy Gartman and Sean Dvoran each had a goal in the victory. In the third game of the preliminaries, the Gaels played Westchester East and the Gaels dominated the game with a 6-1 victory. Billy Murray had two goals and an assist. Brendan Rizzo, Andy Gartman, Matt Gilroy and Brian Mitchell had one each. St. Mary's team finished the preliminaries 3-0 and was the #1 seed in the playoff round.
In the semifinals, the Gaels faced Washington Township for the second time in the tournament. The Gaels fell behind 2-0, but stormed back for four goals in four minutes in the second period and closed the game with an 8-3 victory and a berth in the finals. Billy Murray scored two goals, with Andy Gartman, Brian Dobler, Matt Gilroy, Brian Mitchell, Mike Collette and Sean Dvoran all adding goals.
The final game had St. Mary's playing Malverne Prep, the only team to defeat the Gaels earlier this year. Billy Murray opened the scoring on assists from Mike Collette and Brian Mitchell. With the Gaels trailing 2-1 in the second period, Matt Gilroy scored on assists from Sean Dvoran and Andy Gartman. Gilroy then scored what proved to be the game winner on assists from Gartman and Dvoran. The Gaels carried a 3-2 lead into the third period and that is how the game ended with a third straight tournament championship and tough, hard-fought 3-2 victory over Malverne Prep. Goalie Mike Midea played in both final games.
In January, the Gaels will be playing Millbrook Prep, Tottenville, LaSalle Academy, Wyoming Seminary Prep and Brunswick Prep. The Gaels will travel to Toronto, Canada in February for the Canadian High School Classic and then hopefully the New York State Playoffs in Newburgh.
