Charles Jenkins, lifelong resident of Manhasset, died on Nov. 18, 2000, at the age of 61. Mr. Jenkins, who had been a commissioner of the Manhasset Park District for 30 years, resigned from that position last summer. Last September the park district was host to a party in his honor. At that time, Commissioner Jenkins was honored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Rotary Club of Manhasset and the Kiwanis Club as well as Nassau County and the Town of North Hempstead. In his remarks at that time, Jenkins thanked the Manhasset community, saying "It has enabled me to have a good life, a good business and a wonderful wife and children.
A memorial service was held for Mr. Jenkins at The Congregational Church of Manhasset on Nov. 21. At the service, his longtime friend Richard Miller, who is the commander of the Manhasset American Legion Post #304, spoke of him. "We are here to celebrate and to remember Charles Jenkins," Miller said. "Charlie lived all his life here. He had a family business here. He was always available to help. Charlie loved to talk, to tell jokes and to read." He concluded, "I have lost a good friend."
Rev. Thomas Lamont, who presided at the service, remembered Jenkins from Sunday School. He reminded the congregation of the words of Seneca, "In the presence of death, we must be able to continue to sing the songs of life."
Mr. Jenkins is survived by his wife, Barbara, his daughter, Susan Scott, his son, Charles, his mother, Jane, and granddaughter, Kristin. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Manhasset Rotary Club.
