Francis A. Draves, 79, of Peterborough, NH died at his home on December 7, 2000.
Born October 22, 1921 in Seattle, Washington, he was a graduate of the University of Washington. He served in WWII as a first lieutenant and later as a captain in the Korean War. He lived for 30 years in Manhasset and retired from Amerace Corp. after 40 years.
He had been a resident of Peterborough for the past 14 years and was an active member of the community, having been a member of the Lions Club, All Saints Church and Monadnock Indoor Tennis Club. He was also a lifetime member of the USTA and ranked in the eastern division for his age bracket.
He is survived by two daughters, Lindsey Draves of Glen Cove and Jennifer Draves of Fairfax, VA, one grandson, Steele Shemeld of Fairfax, two sisters, Linda Greenwood of Peterborough, Cornelia Baker of Franklin Lakes, NJ and three brothers, Carl Zeno of Akron, OH, Ralph of Ashville, NC and Richard of Monroeville, PA.

John J. Murphy of Manhasset died on Dec. 6, 2000, at the Northport Veterans Hospital. Mr. Murphy was born in the Bronx, one of six sons of Hannah and Daniel Murphy. He graduated from Mt. St. Michael High School and Fordham University, where he was a third baseman on the varsity baseball team. On graduating from Fordham he was offered a contract with the New York Yankees but instead he joined the Untried States Marine Corps.
During World War II he served for two-and-a-half years in the Pacific Theater of War, including service on Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Guam. He received a head injury for which he was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart. He was evacuated to Aeia Heights in Hawaii. Mr. Murphy ended his army career as a major in the Marine Corps.
After his return from the army he coached the Fordham freshman baseball team. He married June Swanson in 1944. They would have been married 56 years this month. John was eastern sales manager for U. S. Divers, a division of Air Liquide, whose chairman was Jacques Cousteau.
In 1957 John and June moved to Manhasset where they raised their six children. John was a coach of Police Boys Club (PBC) baseball and football. He was also a commissioner of the Manhasset Park District for 15 years.
His wake at Fairchild's in Manhasset was attended by hundreds of friends and young men whom he had coached in PBC.
He is survived by his wife, June, and six children: John Jr., Patricia, Thomas, Kevin, Robert and Mary Louise, and by 17 grandchildren.
