It's that time of year again. As summer vacations end and schools and civic organizations gear up for the new season, here at the newspaper we see a renewed call for volunteers. Just this past week we have received messages from North Shore Hospital, the Helen Keller Center in Sands Point, Old Westbury Gardens and several church groups looking for volunteers. The great thing about volunteering is that there are so many options. North Shore, for example, is just asking for people who are friendly to come and spend a little time with someone who may need someone to talk to. If your skills are clerical you will be in demand in many organizations. If you can drive a car there are people who need transportation. If art and architecture interest you, there are docent positions waiting to be filled. Of course there are always the sports teams and Boy and Girl Scout troops. This week we lost one of our eminent volunteers in the person of Bill Geoghan. He showed the way and encouraged many others to offer their services. We're all busy but volunteering has many rewards. It's a wonderful way to make friends, to become part of something bigger than one's self, and to keep Manhasset the wonderful place to live it became because of volunteers who came before us.
