Jason Hill, who won the Law Trophy last month, came in third in the Area B qualifying race in Ithaca, NY and will compete in the 2000 US Sailing Junior National Championships for the Smythe Trophy, to be held in Newport, RI Aug. 14-19. Nine Laser standard skippers competed in 12 races over three days in very light wind in Ithaca. There were no "throw outs," and one day, the RC kept the boats out past 8:30 p.m. to finish racing. Area B consists of Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association, Central NY YRA, Great South Bay YRA, YRA of LIS (Long Island Sound), Eastern LI YRA and Hudson River YRA. There are 10 areas around the country, which will be sending approximately 20 juniors to Newport. Each skipper will receive a new laser so the race will test skill without the "fast boat" factor. In preparation for the event, Jason has been practicing with many of the area's sailing instructors, honing his tactics and racing skills for this national regatta. Congratulations on the Area B win and good luck in the nationals!

Manhasset Bay YC was race committee for the weekend of Aug. 5-6, filling in for Knickerbocker YC, whose RC was busy with the finishers in their annual club cruise and race to Stamford. Eighteen boats competed, with Medallion winning first overall. While in Stamford, several competitors saw Resolute, previously owned by Jean and Roger Shope, which was sold to the Shopes' friend and past commodore of the Stamford Yacht Club, Bill Foster, after Roger's death. While many still consider Resolute "our" boat, it is nice to know that the boat is looking good and acting as a race committee boat up in Stamford.

Manhasset Bay Yacht Club won the Morgan Cup this year. This women-only competition was started in 1957 at Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club to encourage women to sail. It is open to all yacht clubs along the sound, but traditionally only five compete: Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club, Indian Harbor Yacht Club, American Yacht Club and Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. This year, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club was the host club, with two other clubs competing - Manhasset Bay Yacht Club and Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club. Each club sends two boats, and follows fleet rules, but combines the scores of the two boats representing each club. Two races were held in a dying northerly. Winning skipper and crews on one boat: Sue Miller, Stephanie Bass, Monique Gaylor and Debbie Celebre. On the second boat: Beth Danilek, Kristen McAllister, Valerie Siener and Kelly Barry. A perpetual trophy is kept at Seawanhaka and each participant received an inscribed pewter cup as a keeper.
The Port Washington sailing community lost a dear friend this past week. Eleanor du Moulin, wife of Ed, and mother of Cathy Morea from Port and Rich du Moulin, from Larchmont, died on Aug. 1. This elegant and gracious woman, with her soft smile and a twinkle in her eye, who delighted in her children and grandchildren, will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
