As a 40 year resident of Manhasset and a member of the Task Force, I am writing to the school board to urge your financial commitment in hiring a community coordinator for substance abuse prevention. The proposal calls for the coordinator's focus to be two pronged, one in the school and one "to mobilize the wider community including parents, churches, businesses, and civic organizations." Parents must take a more positive role in this problem and become part of the solution. The schools can do just so much but an independent professional can reach students and the larger community as well. So many parents are looking for guidance and information and support. This person "would provide much needed continuity, resources, direction and support for community volunteers." This is why I support the proposal put forth by dedicated parent volunteers who deserve our thanks. It is time for a professional to step in.
