The Gaels recently avenged last year's two losses to LaSalle Academy from Pennsylvania in a very hard fought 5-2 victory. Leading up to this important win, St. Mary's defeated Sachem 4-0 and Kings Park 3-1, two of the leading teams in Suffolk. In the Kings Park game, the Gaels had 53 shots on one of the best goalies in the area. Only three penetrated.

St. Mary's then faced Monsignor Farrell from Staten Island. Dinos Stamoulis, Bob Scheer and Brian Mitchell each scored one goal and John Keller had two giving the Gaels a 5-1 victory over the Lions.

In the LaSalle game, with the Gaels trailing 1-0 at the end of the first period, Brian Escobedo scored on a breakaway to even the score. Freshman Mike Collette scored on another breakaway on assists from Matt Gilroy and Billy Murray. Assistant captain John Keller remarked: "After Mike scored, the team gained the confidence needed to step up the pace a few notches with LaSalle unable to keep up."

Just before the end of the second period, Billy Maurray scored what turned out to be the game winning goal when he converted a Dimitri Sukhanov pass. John Keller made it 4-1 early in the third period on assists from John Giardino and Dinos Stamoulis. Finally, Chris Cosentino scored his first goal of the season giving the Gaels a well deserved 5-2 victory. The key to this great win was an outstanding effort by the forwards and exceptionally good defensive play. Steve Rios was the outstanding player of the game. Tim Donohue stopped 14 of 16 shots.
