With regard to Phyllis Clark's letter as published on Nov. 18, 1999, I offer the following comments and observations.
The letter and objections to date have failed to provide all the facts regarding King Kullen's proposed supermarket in the Filene's Shopping Center. As Mr. Glacken's letter clearly stated, King Kullen has made every effort to meet the community concerns. If the opposition would now take the time to read carefully Mr. Glacken's response they would know that if King Kullen could, they would utilize the existing building.
The Nov. 18, 1999 letter states there is concern about the welfare of the community. However the letter fails to take into account that the existing building and parking lot are neither safe nor adequate for a supermarket. Under the revised proposal those safety concerns are addressed.
If one reads between the lines of the Nov. 18, 1999 letter, it appears that there is recognition of the validity of the King Kullen Supermarket at the Filene's Shopping Center, but wants it to be placed according to the dictates outlined. As for using the term "spot zoning" as a subterfuge to make the real intent, it just doesn't wash. If the Nassau County Planning Commission, with all of its professional expertise, did not find the plan to be a case of spot zoning, how does anyone come to this determination and charge?
I, for one, applaud King Kullen's efforts to provide safer access in and out of the shopping center. They are also to be commended for their efforts in working with the community to meet our needs. Let's be positive and move forward with this much needed facility and use in Manhasset.
