  • NEWS: MHS Whiz Kids Win Regional Science Final

    The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is no stranger to scholarly presentations but this month there was a change of pace¬the students stood in front of the lecture hall and presented while the professors listened. Sixteen of the region's best and brightest high school students gathered at MIT to expound on topics such as gene mutation, routing information on the Internet, fractography and metallurgical failure, genetic algorithms and cloning¬and take home $50,000 in scholarship money. Jon Calluzzo and Edward Kim of Manhasset High School won the team competition and will divide a $30,000 scholarship for their research on the cloning potential of cotton. They were the New England region team winners of the Siemens Westinghouse Science and Technology Competition, the successor to the Westinghouse Competition of recent years. FULL STORY

  • SPORTS: Undefeated and Unbelievable Blue Lightning Finishes 10-0

    Thunderbolt and Blue Lightning--very, very frightening. The fourth grade girls soccer team won its last two games to complete a perfect season.. "The Wall of Granite" came up huge in both games, preserving their string of shutouts. The defense, led by Casey Gahan, Nancy Peterson, Victoria Rainone, Rose Marie DeVincenzi and Christine Samela, completed the season with nine straight shutouts and a scant two goals scored upon in 10 games. Taylor Fleischacker and Lauren Brennan also contributed significantly in the "Wall of Granite" success. FULL STORY
