The St. Mary's Manhasset Warriors have opened up their season by winning four out of five games. During the first game the Warriors had a defensive battle with St. Mary's team-1 in which both goalkeepers Paul Pate and Drew Keneally shut down the opponents. Following some equally good goal keeping on the opposing side, Chase Cotter, Chris Musalo and William McIntosh launched a furious offensive attack, which resulted in a winning score by Tristan Miller to start off the Warriors season with a 1-0 victory.
The following week, the Warriors traveled to play the tough Long Beach CYO team-1. Trailing 1-0 in the first half, the Warriors came back to tie the game up with a brilliant play by Ryan Clarke. Game playing was stopped by a sliding tackle on the part of the Long Beach defensive player. As a result of this tackle, the Warriors got an indirect free kick in front of the Long Beach goal. Ryan Clarke called for the play in which Peter Gallo ran up to take a fake shot on goal but instead kicked the ball back to Ryan Clarke who followed through with an unstoppable blast in the upper right corner of the goal to tie the game! From that moment the Warriors stepped up their offensive plays with several charges led by Ryan Conway, Lukasz Moskowski and Jim Wenk before Stephen Laratro broke free for the winning score! The team held this 2-1 lead thanks to the outstanding defensive take-aways by Brad Lightcap and Gary Dawes.
The next week the Warriors were again on the road playing against outstanding Sacred Heart in which the high powered offensive of the Warriors found themselves up against a very disciplined team. With goals executed by Mosakowski, Decicco and diving saves in the net by Clarke and Drew Keneally, the Warriors still went down to their first defeat losing 3-2. The offensive rushes at the end of the game by Cotter, Musalo, Laratro and Mosakowski were met by the outstanding defensive plays of Sacred Heart to turn back the Warriors. Our Warriors gave it their best!
Next the Warriors had their first home game in which they met up against St. Aidan's team-2. In the first half, the Warriors defense, anchored by the fullback play of Gallo, Lightcap and Dawes, helped slow down St. Aidan's offensive attack. The outstanding goal keeping of Paul Pate shut down a St. Aidan's breakaway shot on goal, and he went on to execute five saves in the first half to keep the score 0-0 in the first half. During the second half, the high-powered offensive came alive with the plays of fast-footed wingers Clarke, Cotter and McIntosh, which led to big scores by Laratro and DeCicco, who drilled the ball into the net. Even with the score 2-0, St. Aidan's continued to try and battle back, but ran into strong fullback plays by Gallo, Wenk and a brick-wall Tristan Miller in net! Owen Sweeney made an outstanding play by stealing the ball away and dribbling down field. "Big Billy Coughlin" put the game out of reach for St. Aidan's by taking a pass from Conway and blasting a shot past the goalkeeper for the last score!
The next day, the Warriors played St. Aiden Team-1 at their field. The Warriors jumped out to an early lead with a "rocket" shot by Musalo, but the opponents battled back to tie the game 1-1. The Warriors proceeded to pick up the pace with some great heading plays by Cotter, Conway, Clarke and Mosakowski. During one quarter of play, it looked as if Cotter, Ryan and Lukasz were playing "catch" with their heads. The Wariors then opened up the scoring with a brilliant offensive attack by Keneally, finishing off with a two score game. And then putting the game out of reach by an outstanding dribble past two defenders, Laratro took the ball deep into the corner before setting up Mosakowski in front of the net for a chip slot for the final score, Warriors - 4, St. Aidan's - 1.
On Oct. 9, the Warriors were back home on the high school field facing a very tough opponent in OL Lourdes, who shut us out last year. In this game, once again the Warriors jumped out early from a terrific corner shot by Mosakowski to take a 1-0 lead. But OL Lourdes battled back, putting a lot of pressure on the Warriors, before tying up the game 1-1. The OL Lourdes continued to turn up the heat by putting multiple shots on goalkeeper Pate, who once again came up big with a diving save. The Warriors then stepped up their plays, getting several shots on goal by Laratro and Keneally. Clarke once again came through with a go ahead goal giving the Warriors a 2-1 lead. OL Lourdes battled back again with some terrific plays resulting in a penalty shot on goal that evened the score 2-2. Disappointment with this call spurred on Cotter, Decicco and McIntosh to pick up the pace with some fancy footwork, which led to an end-of-game rush by the Warriors. With time running out, Gallo has a take-away, leading to a pass from McIntosh to Clark to Cotter and an on-the-money pass to Billy Coughlin who dribbled past a defender and put the winning shot in the back of the net. OL Lourdes again made several offensive rushes only to be turned back by Pate, Gallo and Keneally in net. The Warriors go on to win again in a 3-2 game.
The St. Mary Warriors record stands at five wins and one loss, with four remaining games to be played at Memorial Field.
