Indians First Night Game Ever! The Manhasset Indians 1999 football team will play Friends Academy in the first night football game ever played in Manhasset on Saturday, October 9 at 7:30PM. The whole community is invited to attend the game and hear the fabulous Manhasset Marching Band at halftime.

The girl's Varsity Field Hockey Team coached by Steve Sproul and Brandy

Schnitzer opened their season with back to back victories. The Lady Indians

are a young team having graduated twenty-two seniors last year almost all of whom were starters. Returning this year are senior co-captains Katharine

Connolly and Carol Hotarek along with seniors Leah Greenfield, Sara Marrinan, Shareen Mishrick, and Sally Rizzo. The varsity along with the Junior Varsity team held their pre-season training away at Camp Shane for five days to prepare them for the tough schedule ahead.

The first game of the season was held at home on September 22 against

Great Neck North. The opponents were held scoreless with no shots on goal

thanks to the strong efforts of the defense led by Katharine Connolly and

juniors Laurianna Capone, Jessica Larigan, and Christine Zaremba. Both the

goals of the game were scored by junior Maura Costello; the second one

assisted by Carol Hotarek. The second game was another 2-0 shut-out by the Indians against Friends Academy with both goals scored by Shareen

Mishrick.

The Girls' Varsity Soccer Team has been moved up a conference and has all 11 starters, eight of whom are juniors, one sophomore and two seniors, returning this season. Several sophomores and juniors have also been moved up from last year's JV Team and are challenging for starting positions. In their first two league contests the team split, losing one game and winning one. In an exciting game against Friends Academy on Thursday Whitney Blake scored the winning goal in overtime off a pass from Michaela Connolly.

The 1999 Girls Varsity swim season kick-off event promised to be a big splash with the annual Nassau County Relay Rally Invitational Meet.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Floyd had other plans for Manhasset High, along with all after-school activities. Due to the high school's power outage and

subsequent lack of school transportation, the swim team had to withdraw from the invitational.

Floyd's wind and rain soaked the day but did not dampen the swim team's

spirit at its next event which was a dual meet held at Bethpage High School

last week. This year's team is an exciting mixture of veteran, journeyman,

and rookie swimmers. Senior swimmers include Lauren Bartimmo, Kathleen Cotter, Emily DePietro, Kinzey Fritz, Lauren Gilhooly, Kelly Mullin, and Nicole Salamak. Kim Henderson represents the junior class, and the sophomores of the team are Kiera Gilhooly, Marissa Kinsey, and Claire Meehan.

Ninth graders Kaitlin Hinz, Happie Palmedo, and Michelle Tempesta round out the 1999 Girls Varsity Swim Team roster.

Swim team coach Matt McGrane recognizes that a small team like

Manhasset's is almost always outnumbered at the dual meets throughout the

season. "We always show up for the meets and will always give the other

teams a run for their money," he says. McGrane explains that each swimmer

must remain flexible and play her required role to help the team match the

strength of its opponent. This means that every swimmer is a critical

player at any given competition, and the team always utilizes each of its

members to create the best match-up.

The Bethpage meet held last Tuesday exemplified the team's effort to

maximize its strength against a formidable opponent. Manhasset put together 76 points without divers to counter Bethpage's talented three. Bethpage came out on top by only 25 points. Notable events of the evening included first-place finishes by Manhasset's 200 yard medley relay and 200 yard freestyle relay (which placed first in last year's county championships).

Ninth-grader Happie Palmedo also took first in the 100 yard breaststroke.

The team and Coach McGrane look forward to a successful season and wish to thank all the fans and supporters of this 1999 Girls Varsity Swim Team.
