"On the Bay" does not understand how the surname of Knickerbocker YC Commodore Jonathan Helfat in the Sept. 2 issue had been transformed to "Welfare"! And "Dan Dellenbaugh should be Dave. The latter is "On the Bay's" error.

Follow up on Knickerbocker Cup:

The first event preceding the match races for the Knickerbocker Cup of Manhasset Bay was the Continental Airlines Regatta in New York Harbor. Andy Horton (USA) skippered the winning J-105 (Tern) with executives of Lucent Technologies for crew. Many spectators watched the races from Mariner III.

The three contestants not mentioned last week are: Paula Lewin (Bermuda), Tony Rey (USA) and Philippe Presti (France).

Tomislav Basic

This young man (23) and very talented Croatian skipper served notice at the 1997 CIGNA Cup where he finished at the top of his round robin group with only one loss in seven races, and was eliminated in the next round by event winner Terry Hutchinson. Basic and his ACI Match Racing team captured the interest and hearts of many event spectators with their youth and relative inexperience. He is currently ranked #14 on the world rankings, based on solid showings at three grade one events where he finished fifth this year in each one: Sun Microsystems Australia Cup, ACI Cup of Croatia and Slovenia Cup. Tomislav began his sailing career in Optimist and 470 classes, and has come a long way in a very short time.

Finishing first, Tamislav Basic of Croatia beat Andy Green of Great Britain in a closely contested final match for the Knickerbocker Cup. In so doing, he also increased his lead in standings for the ISAF (International Sailing Federation) World Match Race Championship.
