Around five o'clock on the afternoon of Aug. 29, Commodore Jonathan Welfare of Knickerbocker Yacht Club presented the awards for the 18th Annual Knickerbocker Cup.

Your reporter cannot recall a more beautiful time on the bay than that afternoon. The front we had been hearing about resulted in fair winds and fair weather.

The award winners were:

1. Tomoslav Basic of Croatia

2. Andy Green of Great Britain

3. Geir Dahl Anderson of Norway

4. Andy Horton of USA

5. Dan Dellenbaugh of USA

In addition to the "object" awards the top four also received money.

More details to follow next week.

* Over Aug. 28-29 the Manhasset Bay Challenge Cup was defended by 1998 winner Greg Danilek of MBYC with crew of Michael McAllister and Jonathan and Graham Siener. There were four challengers of which George and Christopher Marc of Larchmont YC with crew of Thomas Marx and George J. Marx won. The defending team placed fourth.

Two races were sailed on Saturday. Because of very light airs on Sunday morning and a stipulation that no race could start after 2 p.m., only one race was sailed on Sunday.

* On Aug. 29, the Bersuch "Marblehead" Regatta was held at Mill Pond MYC. It has been raced annually since 1965. The Bersuch Cup was donated by George Bersuch who was a successful Marblehead and "A" Boat sailor in the days before the availability of radio control Before radio control, boats were sailed from shore using poles, or from dinghys.

Ten skippers entered the "Bersuch" and raced in fluky shifty winds. The top three finishers were: 1st, Roy Langbord, 2nd, Jon Elmaleh, both of Central Park MYC and 3rd, Kenny Keighron of Eisenhower MYC.

The Marblehead class is sailed internationally, with the world's sail Challenge ever four years. In 1999 it was sailed in Paris and won by England.
