Patricia Roberts, a longtime civic leader, will join the Manhasset Park District's Board of Commissioners this month in the wake of Commissioner Charles Jenkins' resignation, which takes effect on Sept. 7.

"Commissioner Jenkins' departure from the board marks the end of an era at the park district," said Commissioner Michael C. Adam, chairman of the district's board. "His distinguished career spanned three decades and his expertise in both financial and technological matters were an extraordinary asset to the district."

The outgoing commissioner, a lifelong Manhasset resident and president of Snedeker-Jenkins Insurance on George Street, has been a member of the board of commissioners since 1970. His current term expires on Dec. 31, 1999.

Pending approval in early September by the full board¬which includes Commissioner Edward Winrow as well as Commissioners Adam and Jenkins¬Mrs. Roberts' name will then be sent to the North Hempstead Town Board. If the town affirms the district's appointment, she can then be seated as a commissioner. Mrs. Roberts must win election in December 1999 in order to serve a full three-year term. She is in line to become only the third woman on the board in the district's 78-year history.

"My colleagues and I are convinced that Patricia Roberts is the right person for the job," Commissioner Adams continued. "A Manhasset resident for over 40 years, she is extremely knowledgeable about the issues and has shown an incredible commitment to this community."

The park district nominee served as the Strathmore Village Civic Association's treasurer (1988-1995) and president (1995-1998). During this time, she was also elected president of the Council of Greater Manhasset Civic Associations, a position she held between 1992 and 1996.

The Greater Council draws its members from all of Manhasset's civic organizations. The group monitors and speaks out on issues pertaining to the community as they come before the North Hempstead Town Board, the town's board of zoning and appeals and other local governmental entities. In 1997, she was named to the North Hempstead Town Women's Honor Roll for her commitment to public service.

" I look forward to bringing my years in civic affairs to the Manhasset Park District Board," Mrs. Roberts said. "This municipality is often at the center of the debates on how to balance protecting our environment with the need for economic growth." The Manhasset Park District operates almost all of the municipal commuter and merchant parking lots along Plandome Road and also owns and maintains three passive parks.

Mrs. Roberts, a retired registered nurse, first became involved in public service as chairwoman of the American Heart Association's Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) unit for Nassau County during the 1970s and 1980s.

Her initiatives were eventually incorporated into the CPR programs that are offered to this day throughout the North Shore--Long Island Jewish Health System and at St. Francis Hospital.

The Munsey Park resident is today the vice president-medical services for the North Shore University Hospital's Auxiliary, where she works as a volunteer and is a member of The Tortolani Foundation's Board of Directors. Named in honor of the late Julie C. Tortolani of Manhasset, who died of breast cancer, the foundation is based at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System's offices and provides educational services to Long Island women who have the disease.

Mrs. Roberts and her husband, Cy, a manufacturer of nautical accessories, are the parents of three grown children¬Dr. Richard Roberts of Manhasset; Cynthia Roberts Sherlock of Oradell, NJ and Christine Roberts Barsky of Manhasset¬and have four grandchildren.
