On Aug. 8 to 10, the Port Washington Yacht Club hosted the annual Blue Jay Race Week in cooperation with the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound. Over 180 enthusiastic sailors in 83 Blue Jays from 19 yacht clubs converged at the Yacht Club in what proved to be a true test of the sailor's skills both on and off the water. With conditions ranging from 20-25 knot breezes on Monday to 0-10 knot breezes on Tuesday, the Race Committee Chairman, Ed Condon, was able to complete four races. Competing in six divisions, the energetic sailors were awarded trophies up to fifth place in each division. Emphasis was placed on Sportsmanship, with awards also given in each division.
Off the water, a Navigation and Marlinspike contest was run by Jack Benfield, while the sailors were also treated to a dinner and pool party the final night. Many thanks must be given to all those who housed, fed and cared for the sailors and their boats during what proved to be a most successful regatta for all.
