Garter snakes are back!

Not having seen even one in over 25 years, we have seen three of them in the last week: two in our driveway and one in the foyer of a local business/medical office building.

Where have they been? Why are they back? Do they perform an ecological service? Shall we be hospitable? why? Why not?
