  • NEWS: North Hempstead to Revise Building Code

    A problem with new home construction in the Town of North Hempstead has resulted in the decision to overhaul the town's building code. According to the town's planning commissioner, Michael Levine, the town's attention was drawn to the problem last year when residents in the Allenwood section of Great Neck complained the the town that a number of builders were demolishing older homes and replacing them with much larger ones which frequently dwarfed the surrounding homes.     Town of North Hempstead Supervisor May W. Newburger and Town Board members have announced the availability of a new marine pump-out service available to boaters in North Hempstead waters. The service provides boaters, docked or in the bay, with an environmentally sound method to dispose of waste from their boat. FULL STORY

    Manhasset Day Yacht Club's 67th Annual Race Week Regatta was held August 12-15. Awards were presented by Commodore Bill Brakman, Race Committee Chairman Peter Lorson and Bay Racing Chairman Gene Bowler. FULL STORY

  • SPORTS: Blue Jay Race Week at Port Washington Yacht Club

    On Aug. 8 to 10, the Port Washington Yacht Club hosted the annual Blue Jay Race Week in cooperation with the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound. Over 180 enthusiastic sailors in 83 Blue Jays from 19 yacht clubs converged at the Yacht Club in what proved to be a true test of the sailor's skills both on and off the water. With conditions ranging from 20-25 knot breezes on Monday to 0-10 knot breezes on Tuesday, the Race Committee Chairman, Ed Condon, was able to complete four races. Competing in six divisions, the energetic sailors were awarded trophies up to fifth place in each division. Emphasis was placed on Sportsmanship, with awards also given in each division. FULL STORY
