On Father's Day, June 20, the 6th grade boys' lacrosse team traveled to Garden City to participate in the second annual Jay Gallagher Lacrosse Tournament. In the first of three games, the team met their opponents, the Division 1 Garden City team.
Manhasset's team played a very strong first half which ended in a 2-2 tie. Randy Palmedo was good in goal, while Chris Peyser, Patrick Golden, Nick Calluzzo, and Tommy Kaminsky were solid on defense. Mark Shackel and Cullen Molinari scored the two hometown goals, with help from J.J. Kennedy and Jonathan Belz. The second half was all Garden City, however, as they pulled away for a 6-2 win. After four years of sparring with this Garden City team, we ended up splitting the series 2-2.
In the next game, the team was faced with a difficult test, as they would face a team from Ridgewood, NJ. Rumors were that this team was the third best 6th grade team in the "Garden State." But this was our home turf, and the team's pride was on the line. In perhaps our finest game of the year the boys from Manhasset shut out boys from New Jersey 4-0. Randy Palmedo was outstanding in goal, and the team defense was suffocating. Matt Donoghue led the offense with two goals, while Johnny Sears contributed a "picture perfect" assist. Joachin DeRojas was all over the midfield, offensively and defensively.
In the final game of the day, the boys were matched against a team from Wantagh-Seaford. The team's energy level was very high, as they were anxious to close out the day with another win. They did not disappoint. The boys started out with an early lead and held on for a 5-4 victory. Paul Webber scored the game winner with a fine individual effort. Tommy Nolan snuffed out several Wantagh scoring chances, and picked up some important ground balls in the closing minutes. Mark Shackel, Cullen Molinari and Matt Donoghue rounded out the scoring, while Nick Calluzzo and Chris Peyser made some excellent clearing plays. And once again, Randy Palmedo was truly outstanding in goal. The team had an exciting and successful day, the perfect end to a great year.
