Town Board Rejects King Kullen Zoning Change
At a marathon session held on June 8, the North Hempstead Town Board rejected an application for a change of zone for the property at the southwest corner of the intersection of Shelter Rock Road and Northern Boulevard, commonly called the Filene property. The vote was 3-2 with council members Doreen Banks, Tony D'Urso and Anthony Ferrara voting to reject the request and Supervisor May Newburger and Councilman James O'Connor voting for it. The applicant for the change of zone is the Kimco Company which purchased it from the bank which had foreclosed on the property formerly owned by the Zausner family. The property is currently in two zones, the southern portion is zoned "Parking District" and the remaining portion "Business A." The purpose of the request for the change of zone was to permit the King Kullen Company to build a supermarket on the section of the property presently zoned "Parking."
