St. Mary's Express rallied with five runs in the sixth inning to overcome a stubborn Our Lady of Mercy team. Held to only three hits through five innings and trailing 8-4, St. Mary's put together five straight hits to take a 9-8 lead. Matt Horne led off the decisive sixth inning with a single. Dan Maimone followed with an RBI single. After a Ryan Drago single and a single by Pat Kelly, Anthony Figlia's single brought in the tying runs. After stealing third base, Fig was brought home on a game-winning sacrifice fly by Theo Katzman. Patrick Kelly, in relief of Drago, picked up his second win of the year. With the win, St. Mary's improved to 5-2 on the season. Next weekend the final two games against St. Gertrude (6-2) and St. Aidan's (6-2) will determine if the Express makes the playoffs. (A suspended game against St. Aidan's will also be completed.) It will take at least one more and possibly two more wins to insure a spot in the June 12 playoff round.

The Manhasset Girls Lacrosse program has two teams at the 3rd/4th grade level. One team coached by Jim Regan, Eleanor Chorbet and Allan Pashcow, has played seven of its eight games to date. Although the losses outnumber the wins, the level of play has increased by leaps and bounds. Many of the girls are playing their first year of lacrosse or any organized sport.

This past Saturday was their best effort to date. Against a tough Franklin Square team, Manhasset found itself trailing 0-5 in the first quarter. After a very spirited sideline meeting, the girls began a valiant comeback. The effort was highlighted by six goals from attack wing Shannon Pashcow and two assists each from wing Hillary Gallo, Gabriella Vessa and Mary Horan. Kerrin Larson, Ryan Wenk and Caroline Read, all assisted with great defensive play. With one minute remaining, Manhasset trailed 7-6 and had three point blank shots rejected by the Franklin Square goalkeeper.

Although the final score did not go as planned, all 14 girls at the game played hard and never gave up.

The team has its final game, Saturday, June 5 at 4 p.m. at home. All are invited to come out and see Manhasset future girl lacrosse stars.
