The Manhasset High School boys tennis team has just completed one of its finest seasons. The team's overall record is 13-2 and Manhasset is the Conference II champ. The team, coached by Dr. David Dorman, was paced by an outstanding quartet of singles players. They are Eric Saccullo, who anchored the team at the first singles position, Jason Vinoles at second singles, Thomas Bagnato at third singles and Sanjeev Mehta at fourth singles. Both Bagnato and Mehta completed undefeated seasons and all four have been cited for conference honors. The first doubles team of Douglas Gilman and Peter Chen was also undefeated and has been honored with all-division recognition. Rounding out the team are Matthew Livian and Scott Jacoby at second doubles, Demitris Kofinas and Seth Ayarza at third doubles and the alternate players, Jon Moy and Winston Wang. All four singles players and the first doubles team have been invited to compete in the upcoming Section VIII tournament to determine all-county winners and New York State Championship qualifiers. This is the largest number of participants that Manhasset has ever sent to this tournament. Saccullo and Bagnato have entered as a doubles team and have been seeded third in the county.
After finishing second in its division, the team traveled to Hempstead Lake State Park to play an undefeated South Side High School team in a conference play-off match. The Indians returned with a 5-2 victory and the right to play Jericho for the Conference title. The two teams had met twice during the season and each had won once; MHS won at home, 5-2, and Jericho had won at home, 4-3. The championship match was played at a neutral site in East Meadow. With the score at 3-2, and the Indians needing one more win, Vinoles and Saccullo closed out their matches within seconds of each other. Manhasset had swept all four singles matches along with first doubles. A 5-2 win was in the bag along with the Conference II championship.
The team graduates two players. They are senior co-captains Jason Vinoles and Douglas Gilman. Jason will attend Boston University and Doug will attend the University of Pennsylvania; both hope to continue their tennis as well as their education at their respective colleges.
