Sunday, March 28 was a perfect sailing day for frostbiters. With winds up to 14-15 knots, gusting to 20, the Race Committee ran 8 races and one crew race. At one point, white caps were seen on the bay. RC members were pleased with their new grill, which is now anchored to the Worry Wart to prevent it from catching the wind and sailing into the bay. All in all, it was a great day to be on the water. Top sailors and crew: 1. Rolf Steitz and Felicity Ryan (#537), 2. Jonathan Siener and Elizabeth Schwartz (#661), and 3. Bob Kirtland and David Cornachio (#707). Felicity Ryan won the crew race.

Several regular IC dinghy sailors were unavailable for frostbiting this past weekend. On March 25-28, Pedro Lorson and Mimi Berry were sailing in the Snipe Pan Am game trials in New Orleans. Doug Morea and Jason Hill were at the SUNY Maritime College for a regatta sponsored by the Northeast district of the Interscholastic Sailing Association. Doug and Jason are members of the Schreiber High School Sailing Team. Results of both events to follow.

The Annapolis InterClub Fleet and the Severn Sailing Association will host the 1999 InterClub Nationals on April 17-18. As of March 29, 16 teams have registered for this event, with representation from our bay. Interesting to note, this year babysitting will be offered to participants.

Quite frequently, On The Bay receives news about Rich (Richard) du Moulin even though he no longer lives on our peninsula. He and his family are settled in Larchmont. Reports are likely to come from John Browning and Steve Moore who have stayed here and sail with Rich.

At hand is the beautiful souvenir report of the Connecticut Maritime Association Commodore Awards Dinner held on March 24 at the Westin Stamford Hotel. This year's recipient was Richard T. du Moulin. Rich is chairman and CEO of the Marine Transport Corporation and chairman of Intertanko. Marine Transport, a publicly held company, was established in 1816. Formerly known as Mallory Lines, it is the oldest United States shipping company. Intertanko is the International Association of Independent Tank Owners. Rich also serves on the Board of Seamen's Church Institute and is chairman of the North American Panel of the American Bureau of Shipping. His international yacht racing includes America's Cup and transatlantic competition. Currently, with family and friends, he enjoys his Lora Ann.

Sue Miller, is headed to Charleston, SC to be the Principal Race Officer for the Offshore Series of Charleston Race Week in late April. The Offshore Series, which Sue has participated in for two years as a race committee member, is the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (SAYRA) Offshore Championship. Several other local sailors are joining Sue on the race committee.

Last Sept. 16 skippers sent out from Charleston, SC for a 27,000 mile race around the world. The Around Alone included in their ranks a Russian adventurer, an American pilot, a retired British Special Forces soldier, a south African inspirational speaker, and the well-known French skipper, Isabelle Autissier. On their way around, there have been several dismastings and broken rudders, a capsize and a dramatic rescue. Racers have dropped out and been disqualified, but have continued the race regardless. The sailors are in Punta del Esta, preparing for the concluding leg of the Around Alone. The 5,751-mile long Leg 4, starting on April 10, will take the sailors back to Charleston where the Around Alone began six months ago. Top sailors as of the end of March: Class I, Soldini on Fila (France), and Thiercelin on Somewhere (French). Class II. Mouligne on Cray Valley (France), Garside on Magellan Alpha (UK) and Van Liew on Balance Bar (US).

For those of you who missed the original broadcast of the Key West Race Week, ESPN-2 will re-air it on Friday, April 4 at 1:30 a.m.
