On the front page of today's Manhasset Press we report on the condition of Nassau County's finances, as reported by County Comptroller Fred Parola. We give this report because Mr. Parola made his statements at a meeting of the Community Liaison Committee of Manhasset. Ordinarily we do not report on county issues and we report on North Hempstead town issues only as they relate to Manhasset, specifically. One reason for this is that we believe that the daily newspapers are better equipped to cover these extensive areas and another reason is that we have always been of the opinion that people buy a local paper to read about local news, school news, social notes and other things not reported elsewhere. But of late it has become a concern for some of us at Community Newspapers as to whether our readers would like us to cover some county and town stories that reflect the concerns of a larger area. Specifically at times such as the present when, as Comptroller Parola says, there is a major problem with the county's economy which will have an impact on all residents, sooner or later. For one thing, many Manhasset residents don't read Newsday , which is the daily newspaper that covers Nassau County most thoroughly, and the New York City papers give Nassau relatively little coverage. On television we are virtually ignored except for the Cable channels and Nassau County is covered only if there is a crime or scandal that interests the daily papers in the city. We would really be interested in hearing from our readers as to their opinion about our coverage of Nassau County and North Hempstead stories. This question is especially relevant around election time, but there are stories out there all the time. Drop us a line at 132 East Second Street, Mineola, NY 11501.
