The Zosuls family of Munsey Park has announced, with profound sadness, the tragic death of their beloved son and brother, Erik Zosuls, at age 26. Erik died on the morning of Feb. 9, 1999, in Riga Latvia where he had just returned. He had lived there for a year during 1997 and 1998. Erik froze to death over night, just steps away from the front of his apartment building after falling unconscious from causes not yet identified.

Erik was born and raised in Manhasset, where he attended Shelter Rock School and graduated from Manhasset High School in 1990. Erik went on to study political science at Drew University and C.W. Post College, where he graduated summa cum laude and took graduate courses. Erik's parents were born in Latvia and, having learned to speak Latvian as a young child, he found great happiness and success living in Latvia and working in its Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Despite his considerable academic and professional accomplishments, his family is sure that Erik will be most remembered for the way he touched so many lives with his extraordinary kindness and compassion.

A funeral service was held for Erik in Latvia in which his sister, Kristina ("Tina") and the American Ambassador to Latvia, James H. Holmes, delivered moving tributes to his life. Kristina and her uncle, Andris Zosuls, carried Erik's ashes back to New York, where a memorial service will be held on March 6. Erik is survived by his sister, Kristina Zosuls, who lives and works in Manhattan, and his parents, Ojars and Maija Zosuls, who still reside in Manhasset.

Brother Michael Driscoll, F.M.S., died suddenly on Feb. 17, 1999. Brother Michael was a teacher and guidance counselor at St. Mary's High School in Manhasset. He is survived by his mother, Marian, and sister, Bernadette. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Fairchild Funeral Chapel in Manhasset. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary's R. C. Church in Manhasset with interment following in Calvary Cemetery.

Fred E. Atiyeh, a long time resident of Manhasset, passed away on Feb. 17 at St. Francis Hospital, after celebrating his 90th birthday on Valentine's Day. He was predeceased several years ago by his wife, Irmaine.

He is survived by his son, Steven, of Brooklyn, and his daughter, Carol, who lived with him; his sister, Esther Martin of North Wales, PA, and his brother, Phil Atiyeh of Avon, CT, and by three grandchildren, John, Christopher and Matthew.

Fred, together with his brother, Phil, managed the oriental rug business, Atiyeh Brothers, which was established by their father and uncle at the turn of the century. He was president of the Oriental Rug Importers Association of America and guided it through several difficult years. Fred was also president of the R. G. Haddad Foundation, a charitable organization which awarded scholarships to students of Syrian descent. Fred enjoyed tournament bridge and was an accomplished Life Master. He had a remarkable sense of humor and greatly enjoyed the pleasure of his friends' company, which was evidenced at his 90th birthday celebration.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Fairchild Sons, Manhasset.
