Three months ago, through a fortuitous collaboration of members of various Long Island Rotary Clubs, a 40-foot container of relief supplies left a JFK airport terminal bound for Honduras and the victims of Hurricane Mitch. This past Friday Rotarians once again gathered at Building #81 at JFK to oversee the loading of a third container. Manhasset Rotary District #7250, under the leadership of District Governor Eileen Gentilcore, has now shipped approximately 138,000 pounds of supplies to Honduras.

The supplies that were packed last Friday were many and varied. There were building supplies, including 20 sheets of galvanized iron that Hondurans use for roofing, donated by a local Queens builder, as well as Black & Decker rotary saws. There was a carton of work gloves and bags of sturdy work boots donated by Jimmy's Shoes in Port Washington. There were cartons of gallons of bottled water. There were diapers and wipes, good used clothing and shoes and other items too numerous to mention. They were supplied by Rotary clubs, by Iglesia Lutheran in Hicksville and by the Masonic Fellowship at Newburgh Air Force Base. District Governor Gentilcore has made certain that Rotarians in Honduras will be on hand to receive the supplies when they arrive at Colonia La Union, Pasaje Juventad #15, San Pedro, Sula City, Department de Cortez, Honduras, C.A.

After driving to JFK through torrents of rain last Friday, the Rotarians assembled saw the container being filled, posed for a few pictures with the supplies and adjourned to the Coffee Shop of Mr. Huan Han and his wife, Carmen, formerly of Honduras for lunch. They especially enjoyed Carmen's delicious tapenadas and the varied coffees which Mr. Han imports from Honduras.
