The North Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals announced on Jan. 27 that it had denied the variances requested by Manhasset Ventures/Northtown Realty Company. The developer of the shopping center would have been the Kimco Organization. This, for the present at least, puts an end to the proposal which would have brought a King Kullen supermarket to the existing Filene's Shopping Center. The vote was unanimous. The attorney for Manhasset Ventures, Bruce Migatz, expressed shock at the board's decision but said that he could not comment further until the board sends his client the finding in the case.
The Board of Zoning Appeals postponed until March 10 a hearing on the appeal of Thomas Fitzsimmons, AIA Arthur Wright Trust, Leo's Restaurant to permit the conversion of the former Wright Hardware store to a restaurant.
The greatest part of the BZA's time at the Jan. 27 meeting was devoted to an appeal by Raymond Rice for the replacement of a fence on the side of his property facing Dewey Street. Mr. Rice was represented by Attorney William DiConza. Approximately 20 residents of Dewey Street appeared at the hearing in opposition to Mr. Rice's request. The board reserved decision in the case. There will be further coverage of this story in next week's Manhasset Press.
