In this week's Manhasset Press, three of the major stories are related to the automobile, indirectly. Plandome is struggling with roads that need improvement, too much truck traffic and too many speeders. The possibility of Manhasset becoming the home of a King Kullen market is clouded by residents' legitimate concerns about traffic--through Terrace Manor and on an already overcrowded Northern Boulevard. The Manhasset Public Library is desperate for more parking for its patrons. In addition, almost every Chamber of Commerce meeting finds itself back discussing the same issue--inadequate parking. At the Homecoming Parade the seniors dedicated their float to "The Car" and to their need for same. Greater Council Vice President John Minogue this week called our attention to the fact that there have been a series of accidents at the corner of Plandome Road and Bayview Avenue. There is also a major traffic problem for anyone attempting to turn left from Orchard Street onto Plandome Road. On one busy Saturday we observed only one car able to get out of Orchard on a green light. We certainly do not have the answers to this one but there might be a few improvements we could suggest. As to the Orchard Street/Plandome Road intersection, it seems that a coordination of the traffic lights at Orchard and Plandome and at Bayview and Plandome could be accomplished without major difficulty.
We also live in a time when we are constantly being told that we need more exercise and walking is the best exercise. Probably more people in Manhasset walk or jog for health that even consider walking to the store. (We plead guilty.) One more thought. Two years ago in Scandinavia and last year in The Netherlands we were amazed to see the numbers of bicyclists. They were young and old, dressed in business suits or track suits, carrying babies and packages and umbrellas. Their way was made possible because of the well-designed bicycle paths which kept them safe from speeding cars. Maybe North Hempstead could lead the way at a modest level. And think of how great we'll all look and feel!
