Francis E. Gould Jr.

Francis E. Gould Jr. of Great Neck, an elected member of the Manhasset-Lakeville Water and Fire District's Board of Commissioners, died on Monday, Oct. 19. He was 59.

"Commissioner Gould's legacy is a significant one," said Commissioner James Sharkey of Thomaston. "Thanks in large part to his efforts, Manhasset-Lakeville has some of the most modern fire-fighting and emergency response equipment on Long Island as well as one of the most technologically-advanced water supply systems in New York State." Gould was first elected to the Board of Commissioners in 1981 and was subsequently re-elected to another five terms.

Two years ago, Gould retired as superintendent of the Belgrave-Water Pollution Control District in Great Neck, but he remained active in public affairs as a Manhasset-Lakeville Commissioner and as a volunteer firefighter. The U. S. Navy veteran joined the District's Company Number Four, at Jayson Avenue and Northern Boulevard, in 1960.

"Commissioner Gould earned the respect of his peers, which was apparent when you consider he remains the youngest man ever to win election as Fire Chief in Manhasset-Lakeville's history and served as Grand Marshal of the Great Neck Memorial Day Parade in 1996," Commissioner Brian Jennings of Manhasset added.

In 1980, Gould was awarded the District's Medal of Valor for displaying "extraordinary heroism" at a Great Neck fire. During a search and rescue at a residential property on Welwyn Road, Gould found an unconscious woman and dragged her to safety just as his air-pack's warning bell sounded.

Commissioner Gould's previous civic accomplishments included service as a member of the Great Neck United Community Fund's board of directors and as a Scout Master of Troop 145.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie-Lynne, and their five children: Traci-Lynne Young of Great Neck, Timothy F. Gould of Great Neck, Francis E. Gould III of St. James, NY, Mary-Lynne Gunning of Great Neck and Holly-Lynne Conklin of Roslyn. Commissioner Gould is also survived by four sisters and nine grandchildren.

A wake was conducted at Doyle B. Shaffer Funeral Home, Little Neck on Tuesday, Oct. 20, and Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 21. In addition, a special viewing was held at Company Number Four's Firehouse in Great Neck on Wednesday Evening, Oct. 21.

A Mass of Christian Burial followed on Thursday, Oct. 22, at St. Anastasia R. C. Church, Douglaston, NY. Commissioner Gould was laid to rest at Mount St. Mary's Cemetery, Flushing, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to The Fireman's Home in care of Mr. William Bernstein, Fireman's Association of the State of New York (FASNY), 86 Woodward Street, Roslyn Heights, NY 11577.
