The Manhasset Public School District is notifying all public and parochial parents of a potential danger associated with a specific backpack.

Ira Chudd, director of school transportation, alerted the district to the problem associated with a backpack manufactured by the In-Gear Corporation that is sold at Kmart stores throughout New York State. These backpacks, which contain more than one elastic strap, have become entangled on the bus driver's seat, the fire extinguisher and the entrance door of the bus as students exit the bus.

The elastic strap stretches and has led to a child being dragged by the bus. This incident was reported in an upstate New York school district.

The Manhasset School District transportation department has alerted all transportation personnel and elementary school principals have also sent letters home to parents regarding this potential danger.

Parents are urged to be aware of the potential danger of these types of backpacks and others that may have a similar design.
