Dr. Joseph H. Phillips of Waverly Heights, Gladwyne, PA, formerly of Manhasset, died on Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Born in East Quogue, NY, in 1906, he was a descendant of William Phillips who settled on Long Island in 1740.
After graduating from Southampton High School on Long Island, he attended Syracuse University and graduated from Harvard Dental School in 1931 with a degree in dental surgery. He practiced dentistry in Manhasset for 40 years.
Joe served as Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1948.
During his lifetime, Joe was actively involved in a variety of areas: he was a member of the Manhasset Board of Education, a member of Port Washington Yacht Club and Manhasset Kiwanis Club and Sons of the American Revolution. He was an early member and Deacon of The Congregational Church of Manhasset, to which he belonged for 50 years. His hobbies included photography, genealogy and extensive travel to more than 85 countries. He summered in Mirror Lake, NH, for 68 years.
Dr. Phillips was widowed after 47 years of Marriage to Frances Genevieve Tyler of Newton Center, MA. He is survived by his three children: Tyler B. Phillips of Mirror Lake, NH; J. Henry Phillips of Pottstown, PA; Nancy Phillips Curran of of San Anselmo, CA; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held at the Quogue Presbyterian Chapel, Quogue, NY, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to the Suffolk County Historical Society, 300 Main St., Riverhead, NY.
