October 3 was cloudy in the morning but the day brightened up later on and the Manhasset Centennial Street Fair, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce under the direction of its president, Betsy Chesebrough, was a hit. Music filled the air as Parade Grand Marshal Michael C. Adams, parks commissioner, led the parade down Plandome Road. As always, the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department's equipment was a favorite with all the fairgoers.
Town of North Hempstead Supervisor May Newburger announced that County Executive Tom Gulotta officially designated October 3 as Manhasset Business District Centennial Day.
Many of the merchants participated by offering samples of their wares for special prices. The Chamber of Commerce presented the following awards: Best Window Display to Aigner Chocolates; Best Signage to The Mustard Seed; Best Building Facade to the King and Dudgeon families for 2 Park Avenue with its clock tower; Best Participant to The Americana at Manhasset who provided the two horse drawn carriages. Each of the winners received a solid brass engraved plaque. You can see one of them in The Mustard Seed's window.
Prize winners were too numerous to list here (maybe next week) but the grand prize of a round trip to Brussels donated by Sabena Airlines was won by Richard Perman of Stonytown Road. Kenneth Smith of Crabapple Road won the color television and Gretchen Dominge a gift certificate from Dana Buchman. In all there were 54 prizes awarded.
The Chamber of Commerce plans to make this an annual event and it certainly had a propitious beginning.
